The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is a not-for-profit educational organization devoted to the study of the arts and skills of pre-seventeenth century Western Culture. Their Equestrian Guild is devoted to recreating many of the exercises and games used to hone medieval mounted warriors' skills.
Unser Hafen, a local SCA Barony, is holding their Equestrian Guild Championships at Sun Pony Ranch in Berthoud on Sunday August 3rd. The event is open to the public for a $6 fee for non-member adults and free
Events will include:
- Tilting at the Rings with lances
- Spear throwing & spear sticking
- "Heads" - hitting obstacles with wooden swords
- Quintain (practice jousting)
SCA members pride themselves in developing an intersting and accurate persona each develops for themselves. This persona could be simply a name, or a fully developed person with a known liniage, profession and family members. At each gathering, then, is their opportunity to dress in clothing consistent with their persona and interact with customary mannerisms of the time. This event is the championship for both the equestrians and the archers, so the Baron and Barroness will be attending along with the courtly ritual that goes with them.
