Our Lesson Philosophy
Safety |
| The Philosophy at Sun Pony Ranch is always
"Safety First."
Fun, enjoyment, and learning are important components to our program
and they are always implemented with safety as the foremost consideration.
We understand that it is possible to have lots of fun while still
paying strict attention to Safety. Every lesson and skill we teach,
whether to our oldest Adult student or our youngest Day Camper,
is first and foremost, how to be safe around horses.

- All students must wear Certified ASTM Equestrian Helmets which
we provide.
- All students and visitors must comply with the Safety Rules
posted in the barn.
- All students must, to the best of their ability, follow the
directions of their Instructor.
- Safety discussions are part of every lesson, with explanations
as to the "Why."
- Our school horses are not "slow" or "lazy,"
but they were chosen for their gentle natures and patience for
human errors.
- Our equipment and tack is kept in safe, working condition.
- Students are not pushed beyond their comfort levels or limitations.
- Abilities and contributing factors (such as weather conditions)
are all considered for every lesson.

The Horse and Rider Partership |
| We believe that the relationship between
a horse and rider is fundamental to good horsemanship. The Sun Pony
Ranch Lesson Program revolves around this principle.
Becoming a good rider is not simply learning how to stay on a horse
and "make" the animal obey the will of the rider. In fact,
we believe that imposing one's will, only through strength and intimidation,
is not good riding.
At the core of our philosophy is learning to understand the horse
and what the horse is thinking. Once a rider learns to understand
the signals and "language" of their mount, the partnership
and bond of trust between horse and rider becomes a beautiful thing,
where working together as a team shows the abilities and potential
of both.
This partnership and bonding begins before the student ever mounts
up to ride. That is why all our lessons are 1 ½ hours and
include a portion of "Ground Work." Working with the horse
from the ground, even with simple relationship building such as
grooming and tacking up, will enhance the entire experience for
both.
|
|
|
|
|
Ground Work is an Important Aspect in all of
our lessons |
|
We believe that learning the Physical aspects of riding is important,
and we will teach our students to sit, balance, and ride the horse
at different gaits and under differing circumstances. We will teach
them to ride with skill, confidence, and consideration for the comfort
and ability of their mount. However, just as important, is learning
to understand the Mental and Emotional state of mind of the horse.
As each riding student advances in his or her training, we will
teach them how to recognize the feelings and thinking of the horse.
For examples, why does your horse not want to cross that stream,
go over that jump, go through that gate, transition smoothly from
a walk to a canter, step onto a bridge, go by that bush, or take
the correct lead? The answers to those questions may be as wide
and varied as the response the rider should take to the "problem."
Too many riders respond to situations such as these with the "universal
solution" of kicking and whipping and forcing the horse to
"obey." While this may provide the desired short-term
result, it may also create more long-term problems.
Since we teach our students to understand the "Why's,"
they will become more adept at "problem solving" issues
that come up during riding situations. There are many reasons a
horse may exhibit behavior undesirable to the rider. Examples of
some of the questions the rider should understand the answers to
are: Is the horse just being "stubborn?" Or, is he afraid?
Is he "testing" the rider? Or is he just in a playful
mood? Has he lost his concentration? Or, is the rider giving him
incorrect signals? Is he confused? Is he being "mean and ornery?"
Is he tired? Bored? Hurt? This list goes on, and becoming a good
rider depends upon understanding the horse and his reasons for acting
the way he is acting. Once a rider learns to understand the reasons
(and they may be different from one time to the next, with the same
horse and situation), the rider can then work with the horse to
overcome the problems or difficulties.
Learning the language of the horse involves watching and feeling
many things simultaneously while doing ground work and while riding.
Students at Sun Pony Ranch will learn to recognize ear movements,
eye and body movements, muscle tension, and many other signals of
the horse language to help them become better riders in partnership
with the horse. Learning to feel the horse's muscle tension or relaxation
under the saddle comes with lots of experience and lots of pointers
from the instructor.
Depending upon the horse's behavior and language signals, the rider
should be able to know how to react. Should the rider show authority,
encouragement, sympathy, direction, confidence, or what? The students
at Sun Pony Ranch will learn these things all along the way, in
conjunction with improving their physical riding skills, as they
advance in their lessons.
We believe that the key to becoming a good rider is learning to
understand the horse and learning to get the horse to understand
you, the rider. Our lessons are always full of the explanations
as to the why's: Why the horse is doing something and why the rider
should react in such a way. The students are never told to do something
without the explanation of why it is important. Building a trust
and confidence between horse and rider to forge a true partnership
will enable a joyful experience for both.

Group Lessons |
| At Sun Pony Ranch, we believe that Group
Lessons are conducive to the most effective learning experience. Students
are grouped with others of similar ability and riding style choice
(English or Western). We offer Adult classes and classes for Children/Youth.
Group Lessons are excellent for many reasons. More opportunities
for learning are available in Group Lessons because students can
watch each other as they ride. Many exercises are done one at a
time, and each student can watch and see what it looks like when
another rider and another horse are doing what they also will do.
They can learn not only from the instructional directions and explanations
for their situation, but also from other student/horse situations
in the class. They can learn and understand how other horses react
with other riders in performing exercises that they are also doing
with the horse they are riding. If more than one student in the
class has the same thing to work on (example: keeping heels down),
they can see what it looks like on another.
Group Lessons also contribute to a fun atmosphere to learn in.
Being in a group with others who are interested in the same goals
and joy of riding is not only educational, but social as well. Students
bond with each other as well as their horses. Many classes stick
together for multiple sessions and advance together in their abilities
and enjoyment of riding.

Adult Beginning Western Lesson
Our Group Lessons usually have between 4 and 6 students riding
and learning together. This number allows for enough opportunity
to learn from each other and have fun, while still affording enough
individual attention to work on skills and understanding.

Introduction to Horses Clinics
These “Introduction” classes are perfect for the student who is curious about horses but not certain they want to commit to a 6 week session of lessons.
The clinics are customized for three different aged students: 5-7 year olds, 8-12 year olds, and 15 through Adult. The content of the clinics all cover basic Safety Issues around horses, horse personalities, horse care, and riding. More time is allotted for the older groups.
5-7 year old sessions: 1 1/2 hour long, $32
This 1 ½ hour “Introduction” class is geared to the attention span of the younger children. There will be simple discussion on basic Safety Issues around horses, horse personalities, horse care, and Riding Tack. Most of the class time will be “Hands-On” with the kids learning to brush and groom the gentle horses. The last 45 minutes of the class will be spent riding, with each child getting a turn to ride a horse and see what it feels like.
8-12 year old sessions: 2 hours long, $43
This 2 hour “Introduction” class is geared to the 8 to 12 year old child. There will be simple discussions on basic Safety Issues around horses, horse personalities, horse care, and Riding Tack. Most of the class time will be “Hands-On” with the kids learning to brush, groom, and “tack up” our gentle horses. The last 50 to 60 minutes of the class will be spent riding, with the kids taking turns riding a horse and learning a little bit about how to communicate to the horse what they would like to ask the horse to do (use of the “4 Aids.”)
15-Adult sessions: 2 1/2 hours long, $54
This 2 1/2 hour “Introduction” class is geared to the older teen and adult. We often hear from adults that they wished we offered our “Camp” for adults. This class was put together with that in mind so we could incorporate a feel for the fun and learning that goes on at Horse Camp, but tailored to the adult. There will be discussion on basic Safety Issues around horses, horse & rider partnership, horse personalities, horse care, Riding Tack and the differences between English & Western style riding. Most of the class time will be “Hands-On” with everyone learning to brush, groom, and “tack up” our gentle horses. Each participant will have 60 minutes of riding time in a Group Lesson. They will learn about how to communicate with the horse to foster that horse/rider partnership (use of the “4 Aids”).
The Clinic Philosophy
At Sun Pony Ranch we are dedicated to teaching both Children and Adults the joy of being with horses as well as how to be safe around them. We have regular Riding Lessons and Horse Camps to teach the skills needed to learn to ride. However, our “Introduction to Horses & Riding” Clinics are meant to be a “starter” class, to give those without much experience with horses an understanding and feel for what it is all about. These Clinics are separated into different age groups to maximize the experience for the attention span and interest level of each group. Participants get a real “Hands-On” experience to see if this is something they enjoy.
| At the beginning of each Clinic, there is a “Lecture” session where basic safety is discussed and why horses behave the way they do. We talk about horse personalities, horse care & feeding, and Riding Tack. This portion of the clinic is geared to the attention span and understanding level of that particular age group. Questions are allowed and answered. This is a picture of the discussion at a Clinic for 5 to 7 year olds. |
|
| |
Here, the 5 to 7 year olds in their Clinic are divided into small groups where they work with a counselor/Staff Member and their assigned horse to learn and practice grooming. They also watch and learn while their horse is being saddled and bridled, to get ready to ride. |
| In the Children’s Clinics, the kids each take turns riding their horse in their group. In the Adult Clinics, there is a full 1 Hour Riding Lesson with each participant riding their own horse for a Group Lesson. These photos show the 5 to 7 age group riding, getting to trot, watching, and waiting their turns. |

|
for 2010: "Mommie and Me" clinics - for children 2 1/2 - 5 years.
Cost: $36 for each parent / child pair.
This is a 1 ½ hour “Introduction” class that allows the children that are too young to participate on
their own the opportunity to learn about horses with a parent. The Safety Discussion part of the Clinic is the first thing we do and is directed to the adult participant. This discussion will be basic information on how to keep the children safe around horses in general, and during the Clinic in particular. Most of the class time will be “Hands-On” with the kids learning to brush and groom the gentle horses. The last portion of the class will be spent riding, with each child getting a turn to ride a horse with their parent leading their horse on a lead line.
Important Safety Rules:
- No younger siblings under 2 ½ years old in with the Clinic (No strollers or wearing babies in carrier)
- Parent must remain with child (and be very hands on) at all times
Supplies Needed: wear closed shoes and long pants. Riding Helmets are provided. |
