Joey -- Has gone home!

Farewell, Joey

It is with mixed emotions that we sent Joey off to his new home.  Joey has been our steadfast friend and a teacher to so many young riders in the 2 ½ years he has been at Sun Pony Ranch, so there is just a little sadness in seeing him off.  However, we are so happy for him going to such a wonderful new home.

We had decided that it was time to retire Joey as a full time lesson horse.  He was in his mid 20’s and deserved a lighter schedule in his later years.  Also, due to his age and condition, he needed a different diet, including an alfalfa mix hay, than we feed here at the ranch.  So, we put out the word that we would only give him to a really good home that would give him the love and attention he deserves.  Our other stipulation was that the home should have young children who would ride him and give him the light exercise that is important for an older horse.

Joey is still strong and healthy and has many good years left in him with the right care.  We are very happy to say we found the perfect home for Joey.  It is a local family that lives on 10 acres.  They have a 9 year old daughter who has been taking private riding lessons for the past year.  They also have a 7 year old son.  The best news is that they have another horse (an 8 year old Arab mare) and 13 goats living there.  They are in the process of building a barn and riding ring on their property.

The daughter’s riding instructor/trainer came out with her parents for the first visit.  They rode and evaluated Joey.  They loved him.  The next step was to see if their daughter would like him.  She came out and rode him and suffice to say, it was a “match made in heaven.”  The little girl and Joey instantly clicked and she had him trotting all around the arena and stopping and going on command.  She, too, loved him.

Now, Joey is at his new home with so many new best friends—human, horse, and goat!

Joey is a twenty something, "bombproof" kid's horse. He has been used as a lesson horse for kids who are Beginning Riders for the past 2.5 years. Joey has a very sweet temperament and loves attention. You can put your kids up on Joey for a ride and not have to worry about him spooking or running off with them.

We have decided it is time for Joey to retire as a lesson horse. He has been our steadfast friend, and a teacher to so many young riders. He is still strong, sound, and rideable for lightweight, occasional riders.

The vet has estimated his age to be mid 20's. Light riding and exercise is good for him. He is a hard keeper, which means it is difficult to keep weight on him. He looks quite skinny and boney; however a special diet and a lighter riding schedule than he has here should be able to improve this.

We are offering Joey free to a good home, provided that the home meets our approval for his health and safety needs.

Please contact us if you think you can provide him the home he deserves.
