Girl Scout Horse Clinics

We offer three different clinics designed around the Girl Scout programs:

Junior Scouts: Horse Fan Badge

For the "Horse Fan" Badge, Junior Girl Scouts are to choose 6 of the 10 listed Activities in their Badge Book. Many of the Activities are research projects that the girls are to look up and find out about themselves. The intent of this badge is for the girls to spend time researching these subjects. Therefore, in the spirit of this intent, Sun Pony Ranch will provide some guidance, but leave some portions for individual and troop work. We will go over information that the girls are to find by contacting a stable or riding facility. We will also give some ideas on some of the other information they are to collect for other Activity choices.

Riding Addons for the Horse Fan Badge:

There are no required Horseback Riding Activities for the Horse Fan Badge. However, if your troop would like to add in a Ride, we can offer several Options for Riding at an additional cost.

Our “Normal” price for Group Lessons is $20 per hour ($30 per 1 ½ hour lesson) per person. For our Scout Troops, we use a Discount Sliding Scale with a minimum of 6 Scouts per Clinic. We offer a 20% discount to equal $16 per hour per Scout when in a true lesson situation. The cost is per troop (and much less per girl), when the Scouts take turns riding for shorter riding times per girl.

RIDING OPTIONS available as Add-Ons to your Horse Fan Badge Clinic Option:

“Try it Out” Horse Riding: The girls will take turns riding one horse and watching each other in our Riding Arena. We will not go over any lesson material; however, each girl will be offered the opportunity to trot the horse if she chooses (while being led). We carefully watch balance issues and stop the trot if we see any signs of a loss of balance.

TOTAL TIME ADDED: 45 minutes;
TOTAL COST ADDED $50 per Troop

“Learn More About It” Horse Riding: We will use two horses and the girls will take turns riding and watching each other. We will go over proper posture (seat), hand position and leg position. The horses will walk around in our arena and each girl will be offered the opportunity to trot on her horse if she chooses. We carefully monitor balance and control issues and stop the trot if we see any signs of a problem.

TOTAL TIME ADDED: 1 Hour
TOTAL COST ADDED: $85 per Troop

“Let’s Have a Lesson!” Horse Riding: Each Girl Scout will ride one horse for 45 minutes in a group lesson situation. We will do a regular Beginner Lesson to teach proper posture (seat), hand position and leg position. We will learn the Four Aids and how to use them to communicate with your horse to walk, trot, reverse, and stop.

TOTAL TIME ADDED: 1 Hour for 6 girls; 2 Hours for 7 to 12 girls (includes time needed for saddle
and stirrup adjustments)
TOTAL COST ADDED: $16 per Scout

Horse Rider Option FOUR - Week of Horse Camp

Scout Troops may choose to take a full week of Horse Camp during the summer. In taking the week of Camp, the girls will gain maximum benefit from the experience and increase their skills while concentrating on horses for a week. Each 2 girls will have their own horse for the week, learning and sharing the responsibility for caring for their horse. Each girl will have a full saddle lesson every day on their horse. All girls will also have a bareback riding session each day, using different horses.

The Camp Week will include all the requirements necessary for Activity Numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10 (the Horse Show!). In addition, we cover much of the other Activity requirements for Numbers 2, 6, and 7. Therefore, in a week of camp, the girls more than cover enough of their badge requirements. They immerse themselves in learning horse safety, horse care, and horseback riding for a week. Most girls become fairly proficient during this week of concentrated effort towards horsemanship.

To choose this Option 4, there is a minimum requirement of 10 girls (to enable us to focus the week towards the Girl Scout Horse Rider Badge). Our "Normal" Camp Weeks have a maximum of 12 Campers and go from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM Monday through Friday. However, if 2 Troops wanted to book a Camp Week together (to meet the minimum), but had more than 12 Scouts, we would customize a week to accommodate you. We would add 1 to 1 ½ hours to each day, depending upon how many total Campers, because we would add another full saddle lesson (maximum 6 riders per group lesson).

TOTAL TIME: 25 Hours (Maximum Riding Time):
TOTAL COST: $265 per Scout (minimum 10 girls) if booked by March 31st.
INCLUDES: Activity Numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, & 10, plus much of the remaining Activities, 2, 6, and 7.
